Assembly Resolution

GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDENT ORGANIZATION (GPSO)

RESOLUTION ON PUBLIC SAFETY AND TRANSPORATATION

WHEREAS, the Bloomington campus experiences a high volume of automobile, bicycle and pedestrian traffic; and

WHEREAS, instances of jaywalking, double parking on busy streets and the failure of drivers and bicyclists to respect traffic laws endangers public safety; and

WHEREAS, it appears that the Bloomington campus has recently had a rise in the number of traffic accidents involving pedestrians, including one fatal accident and others requiring medical attention and hospitalization; and

WHEREAS, this body believes the campus requires solutions that address violations by pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers; and

BE IT RESOLVED, that the GPSO Assembly asks the IU administration to make more concerted efforts to reduce jaywalking, double parking and other traffic violations on the Bloomington campus; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the GPSO encourages targeted education initiatives to inform drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians of their rights and responsibilities; efforts to make drivers more aware of their surroundings, such as more crosswalks, signs indicating an oncoming crosswalk, slower speed limits and speed humps in areas where drivers tend to speed; and the increased use of the Indiana University Police Department to monitor high traffic areas and issue warnings, citations and fines for instances of jaywalking, double parking and other traffic violations.
